1813: Op 30 november 1813 zette Willem 1 na achttien jaar weer voet op Nederlandse bodem. In Londen was hij per brief uitgenodigd als “soeverein vorst” de regering op zich te nemen. De brief was afkomstig van het Driemanschap van 1813, de Haagse notabelen Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp, Frans Adam van der Duyn van Maasdam en Leopold van Limburg Stirum. Willem aanvaardde hun uitnodiging en het Engelse fregat The Warrior bracht hem naar de kust van Scheveningen. Met een boerenwagen werd hij vervolgens naar het strand gereden. Een van de eerste dingen die hij in Nederland deed, was een proclamatie uitvaardigen, waarin hij aankondigde: “Ons gemeene Vaderland is gered: De oude tyden zullen weldra herleeven.” Van Hogendorp werd eerst samen met Van der Duyn tot graaf verheven, maar overigens na verloop van tijd door de koning ontslagen wegens zijn voortdurende kritiek op de gang van zaken. Op 1 december werd Willem 1 tot soeverein vorst uitgeroepen, wat op 2 december door hem werd aanvaard.
