1814: Historisch weetje van de dag! Op 9 maart 1814 werd het Verdrag van Chaumont getekend waarmee besloten werd dat Nederland en België werden verenigd. De geallieerde landen wilden graag een sterke bufferstaat tegen het Frankrijk van Napoleon. Hoewel het besluit met het Verdrag van Chaumont vastgelegd werd, bleef de uitvoering vaag. Pas na het Congres van Wenen bepaalden de grootmachten de grenzen van het nieuwe land. Op 16 maart 1815 proclameerde Willem zichzelf tot Koning der Nederlanden (en dus ook België) en groothertog van Luxemburg. Nederland telde opeens vijfenhalf miljoen onderdanen, drieënhalf miljoen meer dan voor de vereniging.
