1867: In 1867 leidde de Luxemburgse kwestie bijna tot een oorlog met Pruisen. De Franse keizer Napoleon III probeerde Luxemburg namelijk te kopen van de Nederlandse koning Willem III, die hier wel wat in zag. Dit viel bij de Pruisische kanselier Otto von Bismarck echter niet in goede aarde: Luxemburg, het vaderland van het Huis Luxemburg, dat vier Rooms-Duitse keizers voortgebracht heeft, mocht niet in handen van de ‘vijand’ vallen. Uit deze tijd stamt ook het motto van Luxemburg “mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn” (wij willen blijven wat wij zijn), dat wil zeggen geen Duitser of Fransman worden. Bij het Verdrag van Londen (1867) werd de twist bijgelegd door Luxemburg “voor altijd neutraal” te verklaren. Daarnaast werd besloten tot de ontmanteling van het Pruisische fort. Hierdoor werd Luxemburg in feite onafhankelijk, hoewel het land nog wel in personele unie met Nederland verenigd bleef.
